The HOP is a 330 square foot ZP elliptical canopy, constructed from American zero-porosity materials and assembled in Europe. It has a superior glide rate, soft openings, light toggle pressure and a powerful flare. Thanks to its design it feels similar to a sports canopy to fly. All tandem-masters who have flown them are highly impressed with the canopy and don’t want to jump anything else.

The extremely high glide ratio of this canopy has proven very useful in the bad spot situations, cutting our off-dropzone landing rate by as much as 40%.

Since initial development, the HOP 330 canopies have undergone many months of fine-tuning and testing and have been extensively trialled at the Sunshine Coast Skydivers, the busiest tandem skydiving DZ in Australia (*source: Australian Parachute Federation). In April 2002, we have completed around TWENTY THOUSAND jumps on HOP 330 canopies and, with this proven record of performance, have started to promote worldwide what we believe to be the best canopy on the market.

Despite the fact that we use the canopies in the harsh beach environment with the daily presence of sand and salt, the canopies have shown little or no decrease in performance even after 2000 jumps. If used at an inland, grassy drop zone, the life of the canopy and lines would most likely be substantially prolonged. As with all high-performance canopies, it is important to keep the wing in trim. We therefore recommend a re-line after 600 jumps to guarantee maximum performance.

Our drop zone is a coastal one where wind conditions in which we have used the canopies have varied from strong sea breezes through to nil wind landings and turbulent offshore conditions. All tandem masters have their own style of landings, the canopies perform equally well on a straight-in, deep brakes, accuracy approach as they do with a carving turn.

Thanks to its elliptical design that includes an aerodynamically superior foil-shape, this canopy has a greater glide ratio than any other canopy currently on the market. The HOPs are being used in Strong tandem rigs at this DZ, however they have also been used in various other systems with no complications at all.

Manufacture

The HOP canopies are built by JOJO Wing, a European based company who specialise in and produce canopies for skydiving, kites and paragliders. JOJO Wing are particularly well known for their high performance paragliding canopies which have to have PERFECT airfoil (and a Swiss Certificate) as well as their kites which are probably the best on the world market and which most world champions use. It is through their accumulated knowledge and experience in design of aerodynamically superior canopies, combined with workmanship of an extremely high standard (which carries the manufacturer’s guarantee) that has enabled the development of such a premium skydiving product.

Packing:

HOP packs much the same as any other tandem canopy. Following are recommendations from our full-time packer, who has been packing our HOPs since their introduction.

Set brakes
Line check/clear lines
Hang on hook or over shoulder
Clear cells
Separate line groups - evenly flake cells
Lower the slider - quarter slider.
Nose of canopy placed in centre - not rolled.
Stow loose steering/brake lines with rubber band on the trailing edge of the canopy to assist in preventing the occurrence of possible line overs and line burns on the canopy.
Tightly roll the tail, approx. eight to ten times, particularly at the top.
Lay canopy flat on the floor and S-fold it onto the deployment bag.
Stow lines & pack into container as usual.
